Thumbnail
The thumbnail images are low resolution GIF files (typically 240 by 170 pixels). If these files are printed the image quality will be very poor and not representative of the original report.
PDF
PDF files can be viewed by the Adobe Acrobat reader. The files contain text or a graphics image formatted on a page; in these examples an A4 sized paper is assumed. You can download and install a copy of Acrobat Reader from the Adobe web site. Please note that this format does not maintain the full clarity of some fill patterns used in the reports and some text annotaion may be slightly mis-aligned.
All report examples have been compiled into a single PDF document file and you may download this file if you wish (Hntreps.pdf - 337K)
GRA
GRA files are the native graphics format used by Hornet Windmill. If you already have Hornet Windmill (or just GraWin) installed on your system you will be able to open, view and print the report files directly. The quality of the reports viewed and printed by this method will be perfect. If not already done so on your system, register the GRA file type with the GraWin application to enable the click and open file capability. You can download and install a copy of GraWin from this web site.
Gif
GIF format files are used widely in web applications but we find that the quality obtained for the large detailed Hornet Windmill reports is of a poor quality. Images stored in this format only give a rough approximation of the true image - small text being illegible and the printed image of low quality. We therefore do not offer sample reports in this format.
WMF
WMF files (Windows Meta Files) maintains the image in a structured format holding text and shapes as discrete objects in the file. Most WMF files created by Hornet Windmill are larger than 64K and therefore (due to restrictions in the Windows Operating System) do NOT include a size header. This requires the user to state the image size when importing the file into another application - a default size of 100 by 100 pixels is assumed by some applications.
WMF files are generally compatible with 16 bit applications and were used in earlier version of Hornet Windmill and GraWin. Their use is now discontinued in favour of the EMF format files below.
If you wish to try some reports in this format then we have compiled all the reports on this page using the WMF format into a single ZIP file - you may download this file if you wish (Reps_wmf.zip - 266K).
EMF
EMF files (Windows Enhanced Meta Files) are similar to WMF files but DO include a size header to enable the application importing the file to restore the page image to its original size - or at least something sensible. You will need an application to open or import these file types (eg Word 97, Paint Shop Pro Version 5) and the image should give a near perfect quality when loaded. This file type is the preferred method if you do not wish the install the GraWin viewer on your system. Unfortunately most browsers do not support this file format directly.
If the application used to view the EMF file maintains the integrity of the original file (Word 97 does this) then you should be able to resize the report image - even edit text labels and add further annotation to the page. Please note that this format may result in some text annotation on the reports being slightly mis-aligned.
If the application you use to view the file renders the image to a bit-map image (Paint Shop Pro does this) then all text and fills will be converted to a pixel based image on loading - magnifying that image or printing it on a large sheet of paper will not give a perfect image quality but it should be readable.
If you wish to try some reports in this format then we have compiled all the reports on this page using the EMF format into a single ZIP file - you may download this file if you wish (Reps_emf.zip - 350K). We find EMF files are NOT compatible with most 16 bit applications (and some early release 32 bit ones). The GraWin utility will create report files in EMF format and we use Paint Shop Pro (Version 5) to convert to the GIF thumbnail images used here.
