Q: When I save a file in WMF format from GraWin the system sometimes displays the message "Unable to create an Extended Metafile - file saved as a normal Metafile.". What does this mean.
A: A Windows Metafile is a generic file format that saves a single picture in a form that can be read by other applications - for example Microsoft Office 97 applications. Usually GraWin will add header or title information to the saved file giving details of picture size, source etc., these details can then be used by the new application to set the size of the imported picture - a Metafile that includes these details are known as Extended or Enhanced Metafiles. Unfortunately under 16 bit applications Windows cannot support Extended Metafiles when the overall file size exceeds 64kb and so GraWin reverts to using the normal Metafile format. For many Hornet bar chart and histogram reports the metafiles created are above this limit and hence the message is displayed.
Most applications will read both sorts of metafile and there is no difference to the actual report image between the two, however you will normally be asked to state the desired picture size when importing a normal Metafile format.
GraWin Version 7.03 and later (32bit versions) always uses the Enhanced Metafile format for saved pictures and adds the .EMF file type to classify the file correctly; this type of files does not have a size limitation.
