Q: I have colour coded by tasks by work type but have now been asked to produce a second version colour coded by task owner. Can I do this without losing the original colour coding?
A: Yes you can - you can create several different colour codings for tasks and then switch between them as you need different styles.
As you colour code tasks Hornet Windmill allocates a letter between A and P as an entry on the coding structures using the code item Colours; there is also a similar entry added for the fill style using the code item Fills. The letters represent the sequence of colours shown on the pop-up prompt panel.
To add a new coding you should create a new code item for your new classification, eg. Owner, within the Management Code definition. To display the definition panel, return to the Main Control Panel, select the File menu, Project Utilities item, Code Definitions item. You have a choice of two coding structures: either the Management Code Definition (this is usually used for all custom coding items) or the Heading Code Definition (usually reserved for general coding items including Colours and Fills) - it does not matter which you use. In the definition use the appropriate letters between A and P for the colours as the code entry, and specify the individuals name:
Colour |
Code Entry |
Name |
|
Red |
B |
Miss Scarlet |
|
Green |
C |
Rev Green |
|
Yellow |
D |
Col Mustard |
|
Blue |
F |
Prof Plum |
|

E |
Miss Peacock |

Mr Black |
Next allocate these coding values against the tasks - as you are using a new coding item you will not interfere with the existing codings on the tasks. The final step switches Hornet Windmill to use the new codings: from the Main Control Panel, select the File menu, Project Utilities item, and finally Project Settings. On the displayed panel locate the entry for Bar Item Colour Control, click in the right hand column to display a pull down list and select the new coding item Owner. Accept the change on the panel and return to the Data Grid/Bar Chart display (if the panel is already open you will need to close and then re-open it for the changes to take effect). All tasks will b colour coded according to the new classification; this will also affect reports and you can change to a different coding classification at any time. You may wish to set up a legend file listing the above items for inclusion in all printed reports.
